Having always been drawn to film and theatre, Genevieve Gilchrist, for her final year of the Bachelor of Design (fashion) chose to specialize in Costume. Genevieve’s love of fairytales, literature and art has always been an influence on her as a designer and she aims to achieve the same level of escapism and nostalgia in her own designs that she herself is inspired by. Genevieve’s interest in the darker side of storytelling, both fictional and non-fictional, has played a key role in the creation of her two characters for 2011. The first is a violent French Revolutionary sans-culottes, seeking revenge upon aristocracy for the death of his family and destruction of his home. Historical accuracy was a major influence on this character as Genevieve used her research-oriented process to recreate an outfit appropriate to both the time-period and his social status. Genevieve Gilchrist’s eagerness to immerse herself in fantasy, fiction and all things beyond this world is also fundamental to her second character, a Neo-Gothic demon, based upon the Shakespeare quotation, “Tis now the very witching hour of night, when churchyards yawn and Hell itself breathes out”. |
