Sarah Ly’s decision to specialise in Costume for her final year of the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) was influenced by her strong interest in film, television and theatre. Prior to studying on the Degree, Sarah completed a Diploma in Applied Fashion Technology as a stepping stone for acquiring the skills necessary to create high quality garments for the costume industry.

In 2011, Sarah produced her costume for a fictional character named Adelina Belle Devonne, an aristocratic female from just prior to the 1700s French Revolutionary era. Sarah’s story about Adelina’s life tells of a battle for women’s rights, equality and ultimate freedom.

In designing Adelina’s masquerade-ball dress, Sarah drew inspiration from films based on 18th-century history, and featuring royalty and aristocracy, such as Marie Antoinette and The Duchess, while paying close attention to traditional detailing, cut and hand craft.
