Sana Caron Gerrands’ graduating collection for A/W 2012, entitled One for Sorrow, is an ominous yet playful take on the folkloric superstitions surrounding the magpie bird.

Sana was initially drawn to magpies enchanted by their infamous mischievous and hoarding behaviour that is somewhat reflected in her own personality. With a desire to use all materials available to their fullest potential and reluctance to throw away the off-cuts of fabrics, she has aimed to produce an environmentally and economically conscious collection. Basing design concepts on the magpies’ mannerisms, she has “built” this collection much like a magpie would build its own nest. Sana has also opted to use only natural fabrics and fibres that could be “found”, or “scavenged”, namely pieces of silk, wools, cottons, bamboo, leather and, of course, the odd shiny object.

Specialising in knitted apparel gives Sana the opportunity to design her fabrics from scratch, controlling the fibre content, scale and colour, creating truly unique pieces that add depth to her concept.
