Do-Won Son

For his final year of the Bachelor of Design in Fashion, Do-Won Son has worked on a men’s street collection based on a fusion of Punk and outdoor wear. Combining details and shapes influenced by these two differing aesthetics, he has retained the attitude of Punk while considering the functionality of outdoor garments.

Much of Do-Won’s research is provided by photographs of people on the street. In terms of design elements, one major inspiration has been the biker jacket. He has also focussed on using various strong, contrasting colours for a dynamic effect. An emphasis is on the shoulder in the endeavour to display a powerfully masculine, or mannish, silhouette, and an intentionally aggressiveness look. Do-Won’s range is mostly created in waterproof fabrics and leathers with applied details befitting both Punk and outdoor gear, such as studs, spray paint, rips, quilting, pockets and hoods. The main essence of Do-won’s collection is connected with feelings of protection/security, aggression/defence, the masculine and the energetic, and a sense of DIY.
