Working on her graduate collection, Emma Mitchell has focused her ideas around the idea of androgynous anatomy. Working within the boundaries of ready-to-wear in a New Zealand setting, Emma has chosen to represent the human form as a juxtaposition of the dual strength and fragility of the body and soul. The body comprises many opposing elements, yet all of them connect to work in perfect harmony. This is portrayed though a fusion of soft and voluminous with tough and strong silhouettes, mixing light natural linens and cottons contrasted against thick canvas and artificial fabrics. Long, relaxed, androgynous shapes are presented through the creation of cohesive pieces but strongly dissimilar pieces, capturing the essence of Emma’s design aesthetic.
