Keva Rands has majored in women’s wear, focussing her studies on the design-development process. In particular, she has investigated the conceptual, thought processes and the sourcing of ideas that form the basis of a cohesive collection of clothing.
Fundamental to Keva’s own design process is a love of collecting. She often gathers images by photographing numerous and varying things, including her peers, objects, colours, textures, shapes, and unique combinations of these, as well as clothes and the way that they move with and fall away from the body. Her interest in photography and growing archive of images continue to form a rich bank of source material from which to create potential narratives, and colour and textile stories, which inform her designs. Keva is a keen observer of the everyday world, paying particular attention to things that are often overlooked, or objects that one may be so habituated towards that they become unnoticeable, such as a paper cup, chipped nail polish, or a plate of half-eaten food. She has researched Nietzsche and the poetry of William Carlos Williams, both of whom remind or invite us to see and experience those things that have become invisible, whether it be white chickens beside a red wheelbarrow or ice cold plums in the fridge.
